4月30日のサイゴン陥落・米軍敗戦に向けたニュースをさらにひとつご紹介。

Finding their roots: Babylift children return to Vietnam(AFP、2015年4月26日)

サイゴン陥落を前に、3000人もの子供が米軍により脱出させられた「Oparation Babylift」。子どもたちはアメリカやオーストラリア、スウェーデンなどで養子となった。40年後の今、彼らがベトナムに移住したり親族を探しに訪れたりしているという内容の記事だ。

アメリカ・ワシントン州で育った男性は15年前にホーチミン市(元サイゴン)に戻り、「自分が自分でいられる」と、現在も暮らしている。しかし、

he has not tried to trace his birth family since he returned to Vietnam as he says he’s made peace with his past.

ざっくり訳:彼はベトナムに戻っても、元の家族を探そうとはしなかった。なぜなら、彼は過去と和解した(折り合った)からだという。

一方、オーストラリアで育てられた女性は、

Earlier this month, she returned to the hospital in Ho Chi Minh City where she was born and tried to find out more about her mother, who gave her up shortly after childbirth. But with hardly any documentation to help her, she had little success.

“I just want to find a family member,” she told AFP blinking back tears. “There’s things I need to know.”

ざっくり訳:4月初め、彼女は自分が生まれたホーチミン市の病院を訪れ、母親に関する情報を探し求めた。母親は出産後すぐに我が子をあきらめたそうだ。しかし役に立つ文書はなく、(実母を探す試みは)うまくいかなかった。

という。

このBabylift作戦そのものも、本当に孤児のみを移送したのかなどについて批判があるそうだ。そりゃそうだろう、戦争の混乱の中、単に家族とはぐれただけの子供や、家族が前途を絶望して子どもを育てることそのものをあきらめた親もいただろう。

それでも命をつないで、また母国に戻る人たち。そんな彼らに辛苦と精神的苦痛を強いた「戦争」という国家的暴力を、決して許してはいけない。

  1. Catastrophe was fresh in everyone’s minds, as the first scheduled flight of Operation Babylift flight had crash-landed on April h , killing many of the passengers, including 78 children.
